Castellar de n’Hug Cement Factory

The Asland cement factory was founded in 1901 by Eusebi Güell at the Clot del Moro site in the borough of Castellar de n’Hug, and was in operation up until 1975. The architect Rafael Guastavino was the man behind the design of the factory complex, with its notable use of cast iron structures and a construction technique using flat bricks and Catalan vaulting, combined with Portland cement.

It is now home to the Castellar de n’Hug Cement Museum, an establishment of the National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia (MNACTEC). The factory and its surroundings have been declared a Cultural Site of National Interest (or ‘BCIN’) in the historical monument category.

A visit to the museum offers an insight into the Portland cement manufacturing process, and a tour of what remains of this impressive modernist industrial complex from the early 20th century. The yellow hard hat that visitors are required to wear, as well as the children’s exploration game The Clinkerons and the Treasure of Asland, along with other activities, make it a unique experience for the whole family.
