Gerri de la Sal Museum

The Gerri de la Sal Museum is housed in the former Reial Alfolí, or salt store, declared a Cultural Site of National Interest (‘BCIN’) in 1995, and dating back to the 18th century. The site displays the process of producing, processing and marketing mountain salt between the 18th and 20th centuries.

Visitors to the Museum learn how salt was produced at one of Catalonia’s few inland salt deposits. The tour comprises three parts. The first explains the role played by the store: drawing, weighing, the types of salt and how it was distributed. In the second, visitors learn about the work performed at the salt deposit: from the water emerging from the spring, the transformation of water into salt, and salt storage during the production era. Lastly, the final part of the visit explains the history and importance of this product for the village and surrounding district, and presents eyewitness accounts by the former owners of the salt deposits.
