Can Marfà, the magnificent late 19th century industrial building which had previously been the most important knitwear factory in Mataró, still stores up memories of a fundamental part of Catalonia’s textile history.
The Museum offers a tour through unique collections evoking stories, characters, industrial techniques and processes: from spinning to textile manufacture, from design to production, and from applying the finishing touches to marketing the products.
A narrative which provides an insight into the history of the knitwear industry in Mataró since its earliest days, when in the first hand looms were set up in small family workshops, through the introduction of steam engines and factory labour, down to the more contemporary era, marked by fashion and a series of crises in the sector, with constant investment in technological innovation, consolidating the city’s position as the capital of Catalonia’s specialist knitwear district.
