The Terracotta Museum of Ceramics aims to preserve and promote the scientific, technical and industrial heritage of ceramics in La Bisbal.
The permanent exhibition is designed to show the importance which ceramic production has had and continues to have in the history and present situation of La Bisbal, the wide range of pieces manufactured and the great skill of the master ceramicists of La Bisbal. The museumography aims to showcase the building itself while allowing our visitors to enjoy and learn more from the collections on display. This is a space of communication which provides visitors with a new perspective, establishing a dialogue with the history and the tangible and intangible heritage of ceramics of our town, and by extension, of our country.
The physical site of the current headquarters of the Terracotta Museum of La Bisbal has been a space dedicated to ceramic production for many years. At the start of the twentieth century it already had a pottery workshop, known as l’Àmfora, which specialised in the production of ceramic for domestic use.
In 1922, Salvador Fuster purchased a 5,467 m2 plot located in carrer Indústria no. 8 to build a factory for the production of ceramic tiles. Soon, the success of this new industry brought about an expansion of this space. In 1926, Fuster bought an adjoining building, previously used by “Nicolau i CIA” for the production of ceramic for construction, for use as a warehouse and packaging centre. In 1928 the Societat Terracotta-Fuster SA was set up (with architect Pelayo Martínez as one of the main shareholders) to continue this activity in a more industrialised manner.
The architectural evolution of the factory spans the construction of the original site (before 1922) to the consolidation of the building in its current form, and includes successive episodes of expansion and restructuring, the last of which was in 1970. This factory, with its ups and downs, with moments of great success and terrible lows, continued production until 1984, when it ceased definitively. In 1987 it was purchased by the Town Council of La Bisbal d’Empordà as a site for the Museum.
