The main appeal of this museum is learning about the complex production process of flour in a former mill, transformed into a factory in the 19th century. Visitors can learn about different types of wheat, the systems used to grind wheat, the phases of the industrial process, and the operation of the hydraulic turbine.
The heritage of the Ecomuseum is unique, it conserves an industrial heritage made up of the machinery of the late nineteenth-century flour mill as testimony to an activity dating from the Middle Ages and also preserved the natural heritage, the Rec del Molí medieval water channel.
The visit offers a route through the manufacturing spaces and visitors will be able to see the cleaning machinery, which separates wheat from impurities, machinery preparing the wheat for grinding, and the grinding machinery with its impressive red mills, the true heart of the Flour mill. This is a complex top-to-bottom vertical structure where wheat, flour and other products follow a circuit which takes them from one machine to another.
The mill tradition in Castelló d’Empúries goes very far back, to when the town was part of the capital of the county and there were three flour mills working with the water from the Rec del Molí. Only one of these three mills transformed into a flour mill remains. Now, recovered by the municipality and transformed into a museum, it invites you to learn about the industrial processing of flour.
Castelló d’Empúries Council acquired the building and channel in 1995 to convert it into an ecomuseum. Since 1997 it has been part of the System of the Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia.
