The Igualada Leather Museum and Anoia District Museum, and the former Cal Granotes tannery, are located in one of the country’s most distinctive industrial neighbourhoods: El Rec in Igualada, considered Europe’s most important industrial architectural collection of active tanneries.
The Museum forms part of the Leather Cluster Barcelona, representing the heritage of the leather trade, which in Igualada has been handed down from generation to generation, since the days when the city was first founded.
Cal Granotes is an 18th-century tannery offering an insight into the traditional tanning trade. The Leather Museum is housed in the Cal Boyer cultural centre, a cotton mill dating from the late 19th century, and explains the mechanisation of the leather industry, the wide range of associated uses, trades, tools and techniques, as well as the sector’s cultural significance.
Over the years, Cal Boyer and the Museum have established themselves as a venue for numerous cultural events and initiatives, involving the participation of the city’s network of associations.
