The Cercs Mining Museum, dedicated specifically to coal, covers the technique and history of the sector, while also serving as a visitor centre explaining the relationship between this fossil fuel and the geological, economic and human context and landscape of the Alt Berguedà district.
Housed in the Sant Corneli mining town, founded in the late 19th century to provide accommodation for the mine workers, it is one of the best preserved mining complexes anywhere in Catalonia or Spain.
A mine train takes visitors inside the Sant Romà mine. The route covers 450 m of the tunnel, offering an insight into what work inside the mine was like. On the way out, visitors are accompanied on foot by a guide who explains the process of extracting coal during the 150 years that the mine was in operation.
The Museum’s permanent exhibition is divided into two spaces: one focused on coal, and the other on daily life. The route is supplemented by a visit to the “Mine Lamps” exhibition, an audiovisual presentation, and a re-creation of a miner’s home as it was in the nineteen forties.
