The Cultural Site of the Canals of Urgell (‘ECCU’) occupies the whole ground floor of Mollerussa’s landmark building, the ‘Casa Canal’. The structure was built between 1867 and 1876 by Domingo Cardenal Gandasegui, the engineer who built the Canals of Urgell, to administer and distribute the water from the canals.

The ECCU takes visitors on a delightful journey through time to discover how Catalonia’s main hydraulic infrastructure was built in the 19th century, delivering water from the River Segre to the former Clot del Dimoni, thanks to the efforts of the local population.

Aside from this journey through the history, landscape and society of the 19th and 20th centuries, the Site also presents the future plans for the Canals of Urgell within a context of climate change which will have repercussions for the population and local economy that receive their water supply via this infrastructure.
