Museum of Cork of Palafrugell

Description Practical information

This museum is devoted to the interpretation and promotion of the heritage and territories linked to the Catalan world of cork. Visitors can experience forests of cork oak and the artisanal and industrial transformation of cork.

The visit

The first object in the Museum is the building itself, a Modernist factory designed by General Guitart, which currently holds the different exhibition spaces in the Museum, around a small grove of cork oaks.

The permanent exhibition shows the complex process for producing tops, from the extraction of the cork to the manual and mechanical production, the properties of this unique material, the different products made of cork, and an audiovisual presentation shows the spectacular history of what was the largest cork factory in Spain and one of the most important in the world.

As well as the permanent exhibition, the museum offers a varied programme of temporary exhibitions, children’s and family activities and workshops, providing students and  researchers with access to the Centre de Documentació Ramir Medir, and a shop specialising in cork products.

You can also visit  the spaces managed by the Museum, the Modernist Water Deposit of Can Mario (BCIN), Forns d’Aglomerat, and the Monumental Site of Sant Sebastià de la Guarda in Llafranc.

History

The building currently housing the museum was erected in 1899-1900, for the company Miquel, Vincke & Meyer founded in 1900 by Joan Miquel Avellí, Heinrich Vincke Wischmeyer and Pau Meyer Unmack, a former cork factory and the most important in the industrial sector in Spain. It played a major role in the sector in the past , displaying features which are rare in cork constructions, often functional buildings with no concessions to decoration or to the participation of renowned architects. The building is all the more remarkable for its modernist elements, size and structure.
