Museum of Oil of Catalonia in la Granadella

The museum is situated on the site of the mill of the Granadella Cooperative, built with the support of the Mancomunidad of Catalonia in 1920. Visitors can see the installations and original machinery of the mill, as well as the process for producing extra virgin olive oil.

The visit

The Museum of Oil of Catalonia, located at the heart of the Cooperative of La Granadella, houses the original installations and machinery from this mill founded in 1920, which ceased activity in 1986.

In the crushing room the Cooperative has preserved the original collection of machinery, tools, and authentic elements of the technical processes used there, thanks to which visitors can follow the process for the production of extra virgin olive oil, its values and virtues.

History

Origin and historic values

The Oil Mill of the Cooperative was built by the Mancomunidad of Catalonia in 1920. It is located in the outskirts of the town, on uneven ground, in order to aid the unloading of olives and the subsequent loading of the oil.  Facing south-west and beside the C242 road, it occupies 300 m2 with two floors and a basement.

The building walls are solid stone, framed with bare brick, and an internal square steel pillar structure (with two molten iron columns, probably recycled) and large wooden beams reinforced with frameworks and crossbeams.

This mill is a point of reference in the agroindustrial sector of oil in Catalonia, given its good overall conservation, both of the machinery (in excellent working order) and the premises and original installations from the early twentieth century.

Cooperativism

This mill represents an interpretation of agricultural work and economy and demonstrates continuity in production in the sector of agroalimentary industry, as well as the versatility of the cooperative formula in adapting to economic and social changes.
